Young doctors want a life while growing in their profession. That’s why very few are opting to set up their own clinics. And unless the trend changes, people will be seeing less GPs in Singapore. As older physicians retire, there are but a few younger doctors wanting to fill the void. First, it is quite expensive to set up a private practice. And they’re not even sure it will take off and they can build a regular clientele to keep the business afloat. Second, if they don’t have locums, these physicians will be forced to work extended hours or never go on leave because no one will take over while they’re away. Third, having their own clinic will mean spending time away from family because of the longer work hours in the early years of the practice. Neighborhood clinics often stay open later at night or weekends because it’s the only time people can go see their doctors. The better option seems to be joining healthcare groups where they receive regular salaries and can go on leave because there are other doctors to fill in for them. Group practice also provides continuous training for its medical staff, which benefits both the doctor and the enterprise. Source
