Most people are under the notion that choosing to opt for a medical profession is more of a social suicide. However, it certainly has a set of its own avails that await you in the future. One of the reasons that people tend to opt for fields other than medical is because this particular line of work has the tendency of taking over your personal, social, as well as your love life. With the never-ending work and studies, finding the right partner can be quite troublesome for many. Is medical school dating possible without much risk?

    What’s your solution?
While you may not have much time on your hands, keeping your love life alive is a necessity. Most students directly to opt for choosing partners who work in the same class or residency but the question still remains, “Are you doing the right thing?”

Let’s first look at a few pros and cons of medical school dating before coming to a conclusion.

    Pros
    1. Everyone knows that medicine is a difficult field but no one is aware of the true struggle you have to go through. All those long hours are wasted away and at the end of the day you just want to lounge out and relax your mind. Dating someone who has no interest or knowledge of how medicine works, you’ll miss out on the opportunity of reaching the actual connection.

    2. Dating a med student in the same residency as you would allow you two to build a connection on the simple fact that you’re close and need proper rest, or time away from work. Your significant other would be aware of and can empathize with your work hours and needs and wouldn’t feel the need to fester you and your decisions in the relationship.

Let’s take a situation into play: You’re coming home late because you had too much work to do and your significant other is waiting at home annoyed by your constant absence. At this point, medicine has taken so much from you that you are unable to withstand the pressure of pleasing your significant other as well.

    3. That wouldn’t be a problem if you’re dating your classmate. You two get to spend just as much time together as you do apart so there’s always a chance your relationship going through less lows because of it.

    4. Medical profession may be a large field, however, when you’re in the same class or even the same residency, word always travels fast. If you have any secrets, flings or any one-night-stand’s then there’s a high chance your significant other will find out. It goes the other way around as well which means you don’t have to be afraid of what goes on during your absences. There are no secrets and once there are no secrets, you tend to have much more faithful, long lasting relationships.

Now that you’ve seen the pros, it’ll be much easier to judge the cons as well:

    Cons
    1. In any normal relationship, you will have to deal with breakups the hard way. In this case, it’s going to get a lot worse. Imagine constantly running into your ex during classes. The matters will definitely become worse when you see them moving on and finding someone new, this is not only going to take up your energy in getting over them but it will also put a strain on your studies. Loss of focus during such crucial times could cost you.

    2. No matter how much you try, you can never really get away from work. Even after coming home after a long day, you’ll find yourself talking about your day and reliving every event all over again. No matter how hard you try, you never really get to take time away from work which can be quite stressful for both you and your significant other.

    3. You’re both signing up to go into the same fields which means you both have equal amount of responsibility loaded on you. If you’re looking for something long term then one of you will have to make the sacrifices to make it work. If not your SO then it has to be you and eventually that ends up in a fight for power which never ends well.

    The verdict
At the end of the day, you always need someone beside you who you know and who can understand you. That kind of understanding can only be found if you date a med student from your own class. It’s definitely going to be a lot of work but at the end of the day, nothing matters more than someone who is willing to share your troubles.

In either case, you will need to put in sufficient work into it so the decision solely depends on you. If you found this article useful then you’ll find more on The Almost Doctor’s Channel. Visit them and you’ll get all the advice you need.
