Some doctors are physicians, diagnosing a variety of illnesses and conditions and treating them with a variety of therapies. Other doctors are surgeons, who perform a range of transplants, repairs and removals to address a range of illnesses, conditions and injuries. When physicians and surgeons specialize in the same area, as cardiologists and cardiac surgeons do, there's often a degree of overlap in their training and duties. However, surgeons generally earn more.

    Entry-Level Salaries

Specialty recruiting firm Profiles connects new physicians with potential employers. One of the services it provides is an annual survey of physicians' incomes, done in part by surveying its own physicians and in part by collating data from other industry surveys. In its September 2011 survey, cardiologists rank as one of the highest paid non-surgical specialties, at a median starting salary of $272,000. However, cardiothoracic surgeons earned significantly more,l with a nationwide median income of $360,000.

    Career Progress

Profiles follows up with a second set of figures for doctors who have been in practice for six years. At that stage of their career, cardiologists in the survey reported a median income of $402,000, again one of the highest figures for non-surgeons. However, cardiothoracic surgeons at the same stage in their career reported a median income of $522,875. These figures are comparable to those reported by the American Medical Group Association in its own annual salary survey of members. The AMGA survey also returned a median income of $402,000, while cardiothoracic surgeons were slightly higher at $533,084.

    Comparisons

These figures stack up well against salaries for other specialties. Cardiologists are among the best-paid specialists in the Profiles survey, compared to endocrinologists at a median income of $214,000, neurologists at $237,000 and internists at $208,790. Among non-surgeons, only radiologists earned more and gynecological oncologists earned the same. Among surgeons, cardiothoracic specialists out-earned all but neurosurgeons at $589,500 and spinal orthopedists at $625,000.

    Outlook

The aging of the demographically significant baby boomer generation means prosperous times for both cardiologists and cardiac surgeons over the coming decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that demand for doctors will grow by 24 percent overall between 2010 and 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Given that heart problems increase in the elderly, demand for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons should be higher than for most other specialties. This will be especially true of the sunbelt states, with their well-demonstrated allure for retirees.
