A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has come up with a ranked list of the most narcissistic medical specialties, based on a survey of over 200 UK health professionals. The authors’ findings reveal an intriguing divide between surgeons and anesthesiologists. Here are the top 19 narcissistic medical specialties: 19. Geriatric Doctor 18. Cardiologist 17. Critical care Doctor 16. General Practitioner 15. Paediatrician 14. Respiratory Specialist 13. Radiologist 12. Nephrologist 11. Obstetrician 10. Dermatologist 9. Emergency Medicine Doctor 8. Pathologist 7. Anesthesiologist 6. Neurologist 5. General Surgeon 4. Oncologist 3. Orthopedic Surgeon 2. Gastroenterologist 1. Vascular Surgeon Both specialties reported high levels of narcissism, but anesthesiologists less so than surgeons. The authors cheekily suggest this may be due to “the effect of overexposure to surgeons who are better looking, more intelligent and physically superior”. The study also looked at psychopathic traits and Machiavellian traits. Interestingly, neurologists edged out vascular surgeons for displaying the highest score of psychopathy traits. “Could it be that the phenomenon of cross contamination is at play and neurologists are in fact driving each other crazy?” they ask. The authors, however, have no explanation for why gastroenterologists have the highest Machiavellian traits. Source

Narcissism is related to power and attention: specialties with more doctor's power in the relationship with the patient are the surgical spaecialties... ...especially these dealing with life threatening diseases like cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons etc. Attention related specialties are psyciatry, oncology, neurology: severe chronic diseases with rather poor outcome and close doctor- patient relationship.
