Contact lenses are becoming forever more popular and the industry has boomed in the past 10 years. More and more people are now wearing lenses as oppose to the ordinary framed lens which you see commonly. With a forever increasing amount of people using lenses, there needs to be proper information on how to properly care for your lens. There are certain things you can do in order to make sure the durability of your contact lens and the health and safety of your eye, including learning how to apply your contact lens correctly, how remove your contact lens properly and how to safely store them when they are not in use (if you not using disposable contact lenses by which you just discard them after one day). How to properly apply your contact lens Everyone will acquire their own method of applying their lenses, but there is a certain protocol you must follow in order to ensure the safety of your eye and so that you do not damage the lens itself. Firstly, make sure that you thoroughly wash your hands. This will prevent any debris or bacteria from being transferred onto your contact lens, which can in turn damage your eye or damage the lens itself. The second thing to do is make sure you have washed your contacts in a saline solution so that non of the disinfectant that you have stored your lenses in (see How To Store Your Lenses When Not In Use) does not get into your eye. Thirdly, gently pick up your contact lens and place it hollow side up on your index finger, with your other hand, open up your eye lid. The fourth thing to do is place the contact lens over the centre of your iris and slowly blink so that the lens sits comfortably in place. And that's it! Simply repeat the process for the other eye. How to remove a contact lens This is slightly more harder than applying the lens itself. The first thing you have to do, just like when applying them, is thoroughly wash your hands. This will prevent your eye from infection. Secondly, slide the lens down your eye and gently pinch. If you find this hard then you can purchase various accessories in order to help aid with this process. How to store your lenses when not in use Unless you have disposable contact lenses, then you will need to store your contact lenses when they are not in use, this is mainly at night, as you cannot wear them at night other wise the lens may irritate your eyes, unless you are wearing extended contact lenses. If you do however find yourself forgetting to remove your contact lenses, then contact your eye doctor. You should have a suitable container or case in which to store them in, there are a range to choose from including screw top, flip lids and barrel containers. When you remove your contact lenses then you must be sure to rinse them with a hydro peroxide solution, there are many of these available in the market, this will disinfect your lens to make it safe for use and free from debris and bacteria.
