Since my 3rd year is almost over, I figured I should start a series on how to do well on certain rotations! I’ll kick off the first installment by talking about the rotation I’m in currently–OB/GYN. Disclaimer: I am talking from my experiences at my institution, mileage may vary where you are! 1. First and foremost, OB/GYN is all about anticipation. Since there is a decent amount of procedures in OB and GYN, try to anticipate what the team needs. For instance, if the team is planning on placing a foley bulb, go gather the materials required to do that, and have it ready. Offer to put in the foley during the OR procedures. Volunteer to locate and acquire patient records from different institutions. Do those things while understanding your limits as a third year–don’t go asking to make the incision for C-sections or laparoscopic procedures! 2. Know what to ask to get a proper OB/GYN history. Ask about the age of menarche, the age of first intercourse, details about the patients periods, prior pregnancies and their outcomes. Don’t forget to ask about routine examinations like pap smears, mammography, etc. Definitely, have a general idea about what tests are indicated at which gestational ages! Realize that presenting OB patients will be different than any other patient. You will (usually) start by saying “Patient is a 26 yr old G3P2 @35w2d by last menstrual period consistent with 12w1d US.” I think that those two aspects are vital to doing well in OB/GYN specifically. Obviously being concise and presenting well are also important, but those come with time and experience.
