My gut feeling is that this is oral thrush, especially becos the uninvolved areas ( although very few and far between and along the borders ) are clearly inflamed. if this is still limited to her mouth, she is lucky, becos if it spreads to the esophagus, then she won't b able to eat anything ): Dear Egyptian Doctor, please do the needful for this child (Y) Now, in some people the filliform papilla don't shed and hang around a little longer, in which case it can look exactly like this ( minus the inflammation ) i.e absolutely white, if the oral hygiene is otherwise good. If there is bacterial overgrowth or if the person smokes then it can look black and if a person with a white hairy tongue takes a lot of sugary substance then u can hav superimposed canidial growth and bacterial as well. Hairy tongue - notice there is no inflammation. hairy tongue with superimposed bacterial growth or staining by food, tobacco etc.
