Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, is the best US hospital for neurology and neurosurgery care, according to the 2019–2020 US News & World Report annual ranking of best hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery.

Johns Hopkins, which ranked second last year, grabbed the number one spot from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Mayo Clinic had held the top spot for five years in a row.

Mayo Clinic is now number two in the rankings, which highlight "exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care," the magazine says.

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center remains at number three (same as last year), while NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital–Columbia and Cornell, New York City, jumps one spot to number four.

Rounding out the top five is Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, which was ranked fifth last year, dropped to number 10.

However, due to the changes in methodology this year, US News advises against making comparisons to past numerical ranks.

"In the three decades since US News began evaluating hospitals, we periodically have revamped our measures to enhance the decision support our rankings and ratings provide to patients," Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at the magazine, said in a statement.

"This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals' patient populations. The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families, and their medical professionals," said Harder.
