Researchers undertook this retrospective study to analyze the contemporary trends as well as geographic difference in acute respiratory failure (ARF) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)-related mortality in the United States. They evaluated the ARF and ARDS-associated death trends from 2014-2018 as well as the geographic distribution of ARF and ARDS-related mortality in 2018 for all American residents. During the study span, there were 1,434,349 ARF-related deaths and 52,958 ARDS-associated deaths, among both, the age-adjusted mortality rate was reported to be the highest in older people (≥ 65 years), non-Hispanic Blacks, those residing in the non-metropolitan area. The noted rise in rates for ARF mortality was shown to be consistent across the subgroups of age, gender, race/ethnicity, urbanization status, as well as geographical area. Overall, findings demonstrated that ARF-related mortality rose at ∼3.4% yearly, and ARDS-associated mortality exhibited a lack of reduction in the last five years.
