The universe functions on Circadian rhythm or biological clock. Nature has instilled this biological clock in every living thing right from plants to animals, birds and of course human beings.

Flowers bloom only in the morning, birds start chirping at the crack of dawn. Similarly, our body also works in accordance with the circadian rhythm.

Those individuals that have varying time of sleeping tend to go against the body’s natural Circadian rhythm. Such individuals have more chances of suffering from sleep disorder. Individuals who frequently rotate shifts or work at night are affected with SWSD or shift work sleep disorders. These individuals have difficulty in adjusting to the different sleep and wake schedule.

SWSD or shift work sleep disorder comprises of a steady or recurrent pattern of sleep interruption that result in insomnia or excessive sleepiness. This type of disorder is usually observed in individuals who work in non- conventional hours, generally between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 am.

Nevertheless, this is not a set rule and therefore not every individual who works in shift faces SWSD.However, if you work in rotating shifts and experience any of these symptoms, you should immediately consult a medical practioner.

A number of myths can mislead and result in hazardous health problems. In order to assist in unveiling the truth, below is a list of myths and facts about shift work sleep disorder

Myth #1: It is simple to fine-tune to a varying sleep schedule.

Fact: The circadian rhythm or the biological clock is in charge of waking you up in the morning and making you feel drowsy at night, therefore people working in night shifts or rotating shifts are inclined to feel drowsy in the night despite of sleeping in the daytime.

In reality, it can take more than a week to adjust to a changed sleep/wake cycle. Therefore the possibility of fine tuning to a varying sleep schedule immediately is definitely ruled out.

Myth # 2: Feeling excessively sleepy during the day on a regular basis is normal

    Fact:

Feeling excessively sleepy is one of the common symptoms of SWSD or shift work sleep disorder. Some other symptoms of SWSD are trouble concentrating, frequent headaches, and low energy level. If SWSD is ignored and not treated on time it can lead to severe consequences such as accidents, poor memory, frustration, stress, irritation etc.

One of the most effective ways to tackle this disorder is by prioritizing your sleeping patterns. You should try inculcating and preparing your body and mind for sleeping even if it is broad daylight outside.

Myth #3: It is not important to sleep for 7- 8 hours a day everyday.

Fact: You may not feel drowsy or dull after losing an hour of sleep during the day. However, the lack of sleep may harm your ability to concentrate and respond quickly.

Regularly sleeping for less than 7-8 hours a day for a long period of time can build up a sleep debt that can lead to severe health concerns like cardiovascular disorders, energy balance and the body’s immunity.

Myth #4: If you sleep on the weekends then you can make up for lost sleep during the week.

Fact: Sleeping during the weekends for a longer period of time to make up for the lack of sleep during the weekdays can definitely give somewhat relief. Nevertheless, it will again have an adverse effect on your biological clock and make it difficult for you to wake up on Monday. Therefore it is advisable to always maintain and strictly follow bedtime rituals and aim to keep a standard sleep schedule – even on weekends.
