As a surgeon my serious “never do's" are

    1. Never take any surgery, no matter how routine or straightforward, for granted. It takes a moment of lapse in concentration or a moment of bad luck for shit to hit the roof.
    2. Never ever take any complaint of my patient , no matter how insignificant, for granted. If the patient has a concern, I will make sure it is not serious before taking it easy
    3. Never ever fall in the trap of “premature closure" which is defined as “a type of cognitive error in which the physician fails to consider reasonable alternatives after an initial diagnosis is made”. Have seen too many errors by my seniors in residency to risk it.
    4. Never ever compromise on the surgical steps. Each surgery has some steps which with experience can be omitted to decrease the operative time. But that increases the chances of adverse events. (Refer point no 1)
    5. Never ever be in a hurry if things in surgery are not going according to plan. This is extremely critical to prevent bad from getting worse.
    6. Never ever shy away from asking help if I need it.
    7. Never engage in loose talk or make fun of a patient, no matter what, when they are on the operating table under anesthesia. PERIOD. It is cruel and unethical.
    My fun “never do's" are

    1. Never go for surgery without relieving myself in the washroom
    2. Never let the patient know I am tired or nervous before surgery
    3. Never let the anesthetist know how much I appreciate their work
    4. Never let the hospital know that I am more than happy with my salary
    5. Never wear smelly socks, the changing rooms in most hospitals are small and smelly socks makes it like a gas chamber.
    6. Never ever think for a moment that there is anyone who can do my job better than me.
