Out of the 10 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, Boston experienced the most significant increase in demand for physicians between 2016 and 2017, according to a report from Doximity. The report, released Tuesday, examines the medical social network's database of 70 percent of U.S. physicians to determine which of the 10 largest U.S. metropolitan areas had the greatest increase in physician job postings between 2016 and 2017. The report also examines the medical specialties most in demand year over year. Here are seven findings. 1. Boston topped the list of metropolitan areas where physicians are most in demand. Physician job postings there increased 72 percent from 2016 to 2017. 2. Other metropolitan areas in the top five are San Francisco (42 percent), Chicago (36 percent), Washington, D.C. (23 percent) and New York City (21 percent). 3. The bottom five metropolitan areas with large increases in physician job postings are Denver (12 percent), Seattle (4 percent), Philadelphia (2 percent), Miami (2 percent) and Los Angeles (1 percent). 4. Report authors note physician job growth can vary significantly within the same state and physician demand ranges widely across different markets. 5. Geriatrics topped the list of medical specialties most in demand. Physician job postings in that specialty increased 164 percent between 2016 and 2017. 6. Physician job postings in other medical specialties fell well below geriatrics: The year-over-year increase in physician job postings was 49 percent for urology, 45 percent for oncology, 39 percent for hematology and 31 percent for obstetrics and gynecology. 7. Other medical specialties on the list are gastroenterology (27 percent), occupational medicine (26 percent), endocrinology (25 percent), neurosurgery (25 percent) and cardiology (23 percent). Source
