Who is going to medical school? According to the AAMC’s Matriculating Student Questionnaire 2014, the profile of pre-medical students who are getting admitted to and attending medical school appears to be generally consistent with previous years. There were some findings that showed slow change from 2012 to 2014. For one, the age of students who participated in the survey and provided answers continues to rise. Specifically, the number of students 20-22 years old at matriculation decreased from 40% to 27%, and respondents 26-26 years old increased to 11.5% in 2014.

When it comes to what successful medical students did before gaining admission to medical school, almost all of them said they shadowed a physician or health care professional.
