After experiencing 13 miscarriages in 10 years, a woman finally gave birth to a baby girl. She was suffering from sticky blood syndrome that caused all of the miscarriages. Her doctors administered steroids to help strengthen her womb long enough to deliver a healthy child.

As first reported by Fox News, Laura Worsley had been pregnant 13 times before and her pregnancies only lasted for weeks due to miscarriages. Despite her 35-year age, she never lost hope and finally experienced a successful delivery with her husband Dave, who is already 48 years old.

The couple first experienced a miscarriage in 2008. Shortly thereafter, she suffered three more miscarriages in two years before doctors suggested her to consult with an innovative medical research team. So she took part in miscarriage research with the Biomedical Research Unit at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) under the direction of professor Siobhan Quenby.

Quenby discovered that Worsley was suffering from a condition called Antiphospholipid Syndrome otherwise known as the “sticky blood syndrome.” In the course of her participation, she had already miscarried two boys who only survived for 17 and 20 weeks, respectively. The 17-week-old Leo’s placenta was tested and researchers found that she was also suffering from Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis (CHI), a condition that causes the body to reject the pregnancy.

US National Library of Medicine, women who are at higher risk of miscarriage are usually administered steroids before birth to hasten the unborn baby’s lung development. It also reduces the risk of serious complications including premature death. Premature babies may have trouble breathing since their lungs aren’t fully developed. Thus, doctors give mothers medication in the form of antenatal steroids.
