But, with age, the shape and proportion of a woman's bust is likely to change.

Over time, the effects of gravity mean they will lose their elasticity, perkiness and youthful appearance, often resulting in insecurities.

Dr Foued Hamza, an internationally renowned cosmetic surgeon with more than 20 years' experience, said: 'Understandably, women often wish to reduce the drooping effect and will seek advise to tackle sagging breasts.'

Here, Dr Hamza, who practices at the Queen Anne Street Medical Centre, off Harley Street in London, sheds light on the most common myths that purport to help stop breasts sagging.

And, he offers advise on the options available to address sagging breasts effectively.

MYTH 1: CHEST EXERCISES AND PUSH-UPS PROMOTE PERKINESS

Yes, putting yourself through a gruelling push-up routine regularly will work out the pectoral muscles, said Dr Hamza.

And, while the exercises can help promote a perkier bust over time, no exercise can directly tackle the issue of sagging breasts.

Dr Hamza said: 'This is because they (breasts) are purely made up of fat tissue.

'The firmness of the breasts is related to the skin quality and the size of the mammary gland.

'Women will experience a deterioration of these two physical characteristics as they age, because the skin will become less elastic and the size of the gland will decrease.'

MYTH 2: WEARING A BRA IN BED PREVENTS SAGGING

Even Halle Berry confessed in an interview that she would wear a bra in bed to prevent sagging breasts, Dr Hamza notes.

But, he said: 'This is a false misconception.

'Wearing a bra can help to achieve the immediate desired shape and look but, once it's removed, breasts will return to their natural position.

'Wearing a bra can even aggravate the saggy effect as its wire support works against gravity, weakening the breast's natural ability to self-lift.'

MYTH 3: SPLASHING WATER ON YOUR BREASTS WILL KEEP THEM FIRM

There is a common misbelief that splashing cold water on the breasts could cause the tissue to shrink, which will lift the boobs, contributing to a perkier shape, said Dr Hamza.

'However, this remedy will only serve to increase the skin's elasticity but won't help to firm this body part,' he warned.

MYTH 4: WEARING A LARGER BRA WILL CAUSE SAGGING

Opting for a large bra can help to create a fuller looking cup size and there is no scientific evidence to suggest that wearing a bra that is too big for you would contribute to sagging breasts.

Dr Hamza said: 'But, I would advise that women wear lingerie to fit their natural shape to ensure they are comfortable.'

MYTH 5: RUNNING CAN HELP PREVENT SAGGING

Exercise is always recommended because it contributes to a healthier lifestyle.

However, when training, women should wear supportive resistance bras to counteract the sagging effect, advises the cosmetic surgeon.

MYTH 6: CHEST EXERCISES WILL MAKE YOUR BREASTS SMALLER

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that chest exercises can reduce the size of the breasts, said Dr Hamza.

Training can help with weight loss and, as a consequence, can reduce any excessive fat tissue around this area, but the amount depends on each woman's metabolism and genetics.

MYTH 7: THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT SAGGING BOOBS

This is not true, Dr Hamza told Daily Mail Online.

'If you are healthy, eat well, exercise and avoid excessive exposure to UV rays and smoking, this will play a significant role in maintaining the quality of your skin,' he said.

'Yo-yo dieting can also have a detrimental effect on the breast area because it will cause skin to loosen and will create stretch marks which are difficult to remove.

'Applying creams and lotions, which can improve the skin's complexion and prevent its ageing, is also helpful.'

For those who want effective solutions for sagging breasts, Dr Hamza recommends specific cosmetic procedures which will allow women to feel more confident about their body, including implants, depicted, breast augmentation and breast uplift and reductions for those with a bigger bust

SO WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

For those who want effective solutions for sagging breasts, Dr Hamza recommends specific cosmetic procedures which will allow women to feel more confident about their body:

    1. BREAST IMPLANTS

Implants differ by shape, texture and profile and can be fitted in two general locations with either a submuscular or subglandular placement.

Dr Hamza takes into consideration each individual woman’s requirements and helps determine the implant that is most suitable for the patient.

The procedure consists of a single small incision, usually placed along the perimeter of the areola, followed by a separation of the breast tissue to create a pocket in which the implant is placed.

    2. BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure enables women to enhance their breast size and shape by using a completely natural alternative to breast implants.

Dr Hamza removes the amount of fat necessary by extracting it through the classic liposuction technique from the abdomen, thighs or hips.

The fat suctioned from these areas is carefully processed and purified by decanting and then meticulously injected back.

    3. BREAST UPLIFT AND REDUCTION

This procedure is aimed at women with large breasts who experience a daily struggle when coping with this part of the anatomy.

Dr Hamza is now pioneering a signature technique, the 'short scar large breast reduction'.

The new procedure is performed with a vertical rather than an anchor scar and offers a virtually imperceptible, less invasive solution to women suffering from moderate to severe breast ptosis (sagging) and pain caused by the strain of the weight from the chest on the rest of the body.
