For the first few years of his life, Huang Chuncai was a relatively normal boy. Today, he’s a figure of much debate and controversy. At age four, his family started noticing little tumors all over his body. Now, at age 39, he has a large hump on his back and a 33 pound tumor on his face. It envelops his whole head and hangs off his skull like a fleshy drape. He can barely see. Eating is almost impossible. Even with surgeries, his condition continues to wreck havoc with his life.

He Was Known As The Elephant Man
Joseph Merrick Became A Victorian Era Phenomenon
Huang has been called The Chinese Elephant Man and it’s a name worth noting. Just like Joseph Merrick, the Victorian era oddity that took proper society by storm, he suffered from the same disease as Huang – neurofibromatosis. Like Merrick, he’s become a bit of a celebrity as well, leading to an existence where he is gawked at like a freak and shunned by the a society that doesn’t understand.

Huang Chuncai Has A Similar Condition
Doctors managed to rally some money around Huang (his parents are poor farmers) and he had three surgeries – one in 2007, 2008l and again in 2013. While successful, the tumors continued to grow. Recently, he’s been asked to appear as a “monster” in a traveling sideshow. Naturally, he rejected such a sad offer.

    Unfortunately, He’s A Social Pariah
And Is Constantly Being Asked To Appear As A Sideshow Monster
What Does The Future Hold For This Man? Continue On And Find Out
In 2014, Huang had another surgery, this time to address a part of the tumor that hung down to his waist. While the probability of it growing back remains strong, doctors still committed to the surgery in hopes of giving their patient some manner of normalcy. And what does Huang want to do? Work, and live a life outside the prying eyes of the public. Sadly, for someone like him, that may be easier said than done.
