At best, itchy eyes are nothing more than a nuisance and often means nothing. In minor cases, you may have just something in your eyes, but in more serious cases, they may just be a result of your seasonal allergies dropping by to let its presence known. At least, that’s what a 30-year old woman from London initially thought when her eyes started itching, prompting her to drop by an opthalmologist’s office just last month. At that time however, it was at the point where she was already experiencing swelling and trouble with blinking. She then learned that the symptoms were pointing to something much serious, a tumor developing in the middle of her brain.

According to Gurcharan Kaur, she had no idea that it was that serious and was thinking she was just experiencing the effects of hayfever, which coincidentally happens around the same time each year.

“I thought it was just developing hayfever. My eye would just sting in the morning but I’d just take an antihistamine and it would go away,” Kaur said in an interview.

Furthermore, because she thought it was nothing more than seasonal allergies, she had no plans of getting herself checked. It was just a coincidence that while waiting for her sister to finish a job interview, she happened to pass by a Vision Express store. With nothing to do and lots of time, she decided to have a quick check-up.

After being given a referral or a CT scan, she and her sister then went to Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital. It was there that they discovered a small colloid cyst behind her left eye, as well as abnormal fluid in her brain. She then had to undergo a two-hour surgery to have it removed.

Per UCLA Health, colloid cysts usually develops in the brain’s center and is a slow-developing tumor. Its usual warning signs are headaches, along with some other symptoms. With Kaur’s case, it was an itchy eye that slowly became more and more bothersome.

Following the surgery, Kaur had to take anti-epilepsy medication for two months to make sure she properly recovers.
