From a medical and psychological standpoint, it’s not surprising that eyes and smiles rank so highly in these surveys. Both features are directly tied to nonverbal communication and social bonding. Eye contact, for example, is strongly associated with trust, empathy, and emotional connection. A genuine smile activates facial muscles that are difficult to fake and has been shown in studies to trigger positive responses in the observer’s brain.

It’s also worth noting that while features like height or breasts get attention in cultural stereotypes, the eyes and smile are universal cues that transcend background, language, or fashion. They signal health, emotional warmth, and approachability — all qualities that carry evolutionary advantages when choosing a partner.

So while these surveys may differ slightly in their rankings, the common theme is clear: the features most linked to social connection and perceived vitality are often what people notice first, even before more stereotypical traits.
