As a physician, I have to smile at that old joke — it’s been circulating in hospitals for decades. While it exaggerates, it reflects a real truth: each specialty develops its own culture, mindset, and blind spots. Surgeons are trained for decisiveness and immediate intervention, internists for exhaustive analysis, pathologists for accuracy, and general practitioners for breadth and continuity.

When we talk about “respect” between specialties, it’s less about hierarchy and more about context. In the operating theater, the surgeon is the leader; in the ICU, the intensivist; in oncology, the medical oncologist guides the plan. What earns respect across disciplines is not the specialty label itself, but competence, collaboration, and the ability to place patient well-being above personal ego.

If I had to name one field often deeply respected, I would highlight general practice/family medicine. While sometimes underestimated, these physicians carry the responsibility of first recognition — detecting subtle signs that lead to life-saving diagnoses. Specialists may master a narrow field, but the GP connects the whole picture. Without that integrative role, much of modern medicine would fall apart.

In short: every specialty holds a different kind of authority, but the respect comes when colleagues acknowledge that none of us can deliver comprehensive care alone.
