Woman, 58, gives birth to healthy twins after having IVF (but she claims it was all God's doing)

    • The unnamed woman had a boy and a girl prematurely by Caesarean section
    • Twins Victor and Victoria spent three weeks in neonatal intensive care in IMSS Regional General Hospital No. 1, in Culiacán, Mexico, but are now doing well
    • She said she stayed calm during the C-section and trusted God for a miracle
    • Both the mother and babies will require months of monitoring and tests
    • Being an older mother can be risky, with recent cases of death and lost custody
A woman who gave birth to twins aged 58 has spoken of her joy at becoming a mother.

Surgeons delivered a boy and a girl, named Victor and Victoria, in a Caesarean section in Culiacán, Mexico.

Victor weighed in at 1.86kg (4.1lb) and Victoria at 1.96kg (4.3lb) - both beneath the healthy newborn weight of 3.4kg (7.5lb).

Although delivered prematurely at just 33 weeks, local media report that both are doing well after spending three weeks in a neonatal intensive care unit at IMSS Regional General Hospital No. 1.

The mother - who asked not to be named - said: 'During the C-section, I was very calm, I trusted in God that he would perform this miracle for us, and that everything would turn out well.

'And when I finally heard the children cry out hard, well, it filled me with joy.

'Then the paediatrician immediately took them out of the operating room to look after them.'

The mother reportedly became pregnant after a round of IVF treatment.

Her health was intensely monitored for a month before doctors decided to do a C-section, EL Universal reported.

Doctors say she and the twins will undergo months of monitoring and tests to make sure the babies are maturing properly.

Although older mums of twins are becoming more common, it can come with risks.

The world's oldest verified mother of twins Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, from Spain, died of cancer two years after giving birth, just seven days short of her 67th birthday.

In a separate case, Mauricia Ibanez, 64, also from Spain, had to hand over her two-month-old twins to social services earlier this month after they ruled they were 'at risk.'

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS OF BEING AN OLDER MOTHER?

As women get older both mothers and babies face an increased risk of complications during pregnancy.

These are due to changes in the reproductive system and generally deteriorating health with age.

Mothers are at a greater risk of high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia, which can lead to fits that are life-threatening for both her and the baby.

Babies of older mothers are more susceptible to congenital abnormalities, such as Down's Syndrome.
