There are constant changes in the field of medicine today, with new research results appearing frequently. Society has progressed with these recent findings, and yet much is still unknown. Almost every area of medicine can use additional information and studies to improve living conditions in the modern world. There are numerous suggestions for medical research and opportunities for involvement in these. Diabetes Diabetes has been said to be increasing, with many people not even aware that they have the disease. In addition to needed research on the genetic factors and prevention techniques, there is a need for further research in discovering the relationship between diabetes and heart disease, especially in women. Another topic needing research is whether or not diabetes type 2, or adult diabetes, can be reversed. If so, will diet and exercise help reverse diabetes? Kidneys Popular kidney treatments are either dialysis or kidney transplants. With the inadequate number of kidneys available for transplants, as well as the long waiting time for people on dialysis, a new problem worthy of research has emerged. Should people be allowed to voluntarily sell their kidneys? Although this is currently illegal, there are respectable people who think it should be legal. Breast Cancer There is a new issue that is an interesting research topic. Although there have been questions raised over whether mammographies are useful for women between 40 to 49, the controversy now includes whether mammographies should be used for women after 60. Another possibility is: "The Relationship Between Obesity, Insulin and Breast Cancer." Are there foods and/or vitamins that may help prevent breast cancer? This is also worthy of consideration. AIDS AIDS is an area where medical research is needed. Two major issues and topics for research are: "The Manufacturing of Generic Drugs Versus Pharmaceutical Companies" and "The Rights of the Individual Versus the Community." Vitamin D Vitamin D has long been recommended for prevention and/or treatment of osteoporosis, arthritis, breast cancer and heart failure. Presently, doctors are beginning to wonder if it is as successful as previously thought. A good topic for research would be: "Is Vitamin D Overrated?" back pain and Osteoporosis Is there a relationship between the psyche and back pain as some doctors advocate? This is an idea that can be explored. Another topic to consider is the relationship between osteoporosis and back pain. Also, are there non-surgical procedures for treating back pain that might be explored before undergoing surgery? Alzheimers Alzheimers can be devastating to the family whose relative is suffering from this disease. The patient can linger for years and eventually cannot recognize family members. Since this is a common ailment, the methods that can be used to prevent Alzheimers Disease is a worthwhile topic needing further research. Also, find out what new treatments may be available. Medical Ethics Medical ethics apply to a variety of issues in medicine. Those suggested for further research include ideas such as: Is it ethical to experiment on humans, aborted fetuses or animals? What kind of care should be given to one who is terminally ill? Is abortion ethical if an unborn baby has a defect? Should birth control methods be available to teenagers? Source
